DESCRIPTION: ...HIT OR MISS SNOW SHOWERS CONTINUE INTO FRIDAY... .Snow showers from the Gulf of Alaska will continue through Friday morning at least. Additional snowfall accumulations of 3 to 5 inches are expected through Friday, with some locally higher amounts possible. Snowfall accumulations will be widely variable across the area due to the hit or miss nature of the showers. Rates as high as 1 inch per hour and visibilities down to 1/2 mile or less will be possible within any heavier showers that repeatedly move over the same location. Another band of snow showers moving through during the latter half of Friday will bring 1 to 3 inches of new snow across the area. A stronger system will arrive late Friday night into Saturday. * WHAT...Snow. Additional snow accumulations of up to one inch. * WHERE...City and Borough of Juneau. * WHEN...Until 4 AM AKDT Friday. * IMPACTS...Travel could be very difficult. The hazardous conditions could impact the morning or evening commute. * ADDITIONAL DETAILS...Amounts could be highly variable.

Hail is a form of precipitation which is recognized by large solid balls or
clumps of ice. Hail is created by thunderstorm clouds with strong updrafts of wind.
As the hailstones remain in the updraft, ice is deposited onto them until their
weight becomes heavy enough for them to fall to the earth's surface.
Hail storms can cause significant damage to crops, aircrafts, and man-made structures,
despite the fact that the duration is usually less than ten minutes.

A mammatus cloud is a cloud with a unique feature which resembles
a web of pouches hanging along the base of the cloud.
In the United States, mammatus clouds tend to form in the warmer months, commonly
in the Midwest and eastern regions.
While they usually form at the bottom of a cumulonimbis cloud, they can also form
under altostratus, altocumulus, stratocumulus, and cirrus clouds. Mammatus clouds
warn that severe weather is close.
