AREAS AFFECTED: Koochiching; North St. Louis; Northern Cook/Northern Lake; North Itasca; Central St. Louis; Carlton/South St. Louis; Douglas; Bayfield; Ashland; Iron
DESCRIPTION: * WHAT...Heavy snow expected. Total snow accumulations between 4 and 8 inches except between 6 and 12 inches for northern Iron County and the higher terrain of the North Shore. Winds gusting as high as 35 mph. * WHERE...In Minnesota, Koochiching, North Itasca, Carlton, St. Louis, and Northern Cook and Lake Counties. In Wisconsin, Ashland, Bayfield, Douglas, and Iron Counties. This includes the Tribal Lands of the northwestern area of the Lac du Flambeau Band, the Fond du Lac Band, the Red Cliff Band, the Bad River Reservation and the Bois Forte Band, Lake Vermilion, Nett Lake and, Deer Creek areas. Other locations including the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore, Madeline Island and Voyageurs National Park. The entire Boundary Waters is also included. * WHEN...From 1 PM this afternoon to 1 PM CDT Friday. * IMPACTS...Travel could be very difficult. The hazardous conditions could impact the Thursday evening and Friday morning commutes. * ADDITIONAL DETAILS...Snowfall rates will be intense, possibly exceeding 1" per hour Thursday afternoon and evening.

A wall cloud forms underneath the base of a cumulonimbus cloud,
and can be a hotbed for deadly tornadoes.
Wall clouds are formed by air flowing into the cumulonimbus clouds, which can
result in the wall cloud descending from the base of the cumulonimbus cloud, or
rising fractus clouds which join to the base of the storm cloud as the wall cloud
takes shape.
Wall clouds can be very large, and in the Northern Hemisphere they generally
form at the southern edge of cumulonimbus clouds.

Altostratus clouds form at mid to high-level altitudes
(between 2 and 7 km) and are created by a warm, stable air mass which causes
water vapor
to condense as it rise through the atmosphere. Usually altostratus clouds are
featureless sheets characterized by a uniform color.
In some cases, wind punching through the cloud formation may give it a waved
appearance, called altostratus undulatus. Altostratus clouds
are commonly seen with other cloud formations accompanying them.
