AREAS AFFECTED: Southern Gifford Pinchot National Forest; Mt. Adams Ranger District of the Gifford-Pinchot National Forest

DESCRIPTION: The National Weather Service in Portland has issued a Red Flag Warning for thunderstorms, which is in effect from noon to 9 PM PDT Wednesday. The Fire Weather Watch is no longer in effect. * AFFECTED AREA...In Washington, Fire Weather Zone 634 Southern Gifford Pinchot National Forest and Fire Weather Zone 635 Mt. Adams Ranger District of the Gifford-Pinchot National Forest. * DRY AND UNSTABLE...Unstable conditions with elevated mixing heights may promote pyroconvective activity over ongoing fires. Relative humidities as low as 20%. Temperatures up to 90 to 95. * IMPACTS...Conditions may be favorable for rapid fire spread which may threaten life and property. High instability may result in fire growth.

INSTRUCTION: A Red Flag Warning means that critical fire weather conditions are either occurring now, or will shortly. A combination of the above conditions can contribute to extreme fire behavior.

A hole punch cloud is an unusual occurrence when a disk-shaped hole appears in a cirrostratus, cirrocumulus, or altocumulus cloud.

When part of the cloud forms ice crystals, water droplets in the surrounding area of the cloud evaporate. The effect of this process produces a large elliptical gap in the cloud. The hole punch cloud formation is rare, but it is not specific to any geographic area.

Other names which have been used to describe this phenomena include fallstreak hole, skypunch, and cloud hole.

A nimbostratus cloud is similar to a stratus cloud in its formless, smooth appearance. However, a nimbostratus cloud is darker than a stratus cloud, because it is thicker.

Unlike a stratus cloud, a nimbostratus cloud typically brings with it the threat of moderate to heavy precipitation. In some cases, the precipitation may evaporate before reaching the ground, a phenomenon known as virga.
